You found the NM Collector Free Gun Inventory Database Software Page!

NM Gun Inventory Database Software is now free.

After years of development, usage, and input from the gun collecting community NM Gun Collector Software is stable and well established. When Microsoft changed their development standards for deployment I stopped developing this software and created NM Collector Software instead.  NM Collector Software is designed for any collection (including a Home Inventory Software template) and will run on any computer including Windows, Mac and Linux.    I do provide a free version of it as well but it is limited in functionality.

Due to the continued popularity of this software, I am having trouble with standard Web Hosting Plans disabling my site because of excessive bandwidth usage due to too many downloads of this software. As a result I am searching for alternative hosting options. The first alternative I tried was DropBox. However, as you will see if you click the link below, DropBox has disabled my account due to excessive bandwidth (too many downloads).

Update, apparently Dropbox re-enabled the download but I suspect it can be disabled at any time again.

When you run the installer please change the default installation directory as the default (C:\Program Files (x86)\nmCollector\) which used to work for XP and earlier will cause the program to generate run-time error when you run it in Vista or later. This program was developed for Windows XP and earlier so I have not updated it for Vista or later. However, it is still so popular that people figured out how to make it work by changing the default installation directory. I am making it available for free to those who wish to continue to use it and can follow the instructions to install it to any directory other than the default. Please do not expect me to support it. Please don't ask me for help if you install it to the default directory and get a run-time error. Just uninstall it and reinstall it to a different directory. Thanks!

If you download from CNet, please looks for the "Direct Download Link." It appears to be safe (at least for now). I do not think the main "Download Now" link is safe because they package other installers with it and my virus scanner said it had a threat. The "Direct Download Link" appears (at this time) to be just my installer and it was fine when I checked it. However, since the file is out of my control once I upload it to CNet I cannot guarantee the file will continue to be safe once it is out of my control. It is best to download from my DropBox site but, if that is not available and you must use CNet, please run a virus scanner to be sure. I hesitate to use CNet but given temporary bandwidth issues on DropBox I don't have a viable alternative. Thanks for your understanding.

This is Gun Database Software only and runs on Windows operating systems only.

For Windows 8, 7, and Vista, DO NOT INSTALL TO THE C:\Program Files directory or it will not Work!!!!

"Many fellow collectors told me to buy this product and forget others." Gil Reynolds, CA
It may be a bit long in the tooth but this gun database software still works well and meets most gun collector's needs.  Other products have showed up on the market to fill the same purpose.  One of them, I will not say which one, even started out as a blatant copy of NM Gun Collector software even with matching screens but when I challenged them they denied it and quickly changed it.

Whether you're starting with a few guns or have already collected several hundred, you can use NM Gun Collector Software to easily catalog and track your growing firearms collection. This full featured database stores detailed information on your collected pieces, including costs, values and digital photographs and provides organized and definitive records for insurance and estate planning purposes.

Easy-to-use features let you:

Protect your valuable data

NM Gun Collector Software can keep your collection information from prying eyes with optional, robust security that doesn't get in your way if you don't want it. Additionally, you can backup or even repair your collection database on demand, providing you with safe off-site storage of your important records.

Great for even really large collections!

Managing the records of a large collection of five hundred or more firearms can be very difficult if you're using a simple spreadsheet program or word processor. Fortunately NM Gun Collecting Software saves you a time and trouble by providing a statistics tab which gives you quick access to items in your collection and doesn't require you to scroll through long lists. Just enter the search criteria to limit the scope of your search, select the item you want, and then Click the "Go To" button to go right to it! You can also print reports based only on search criteria that you specify yourself!

A few Notes about electronic BATFE Bound Books

Please be sure you know what you are getting when you sign up for software that claims to meet the requirements for an electronic BATFE Bound Book.  Here are a few things to consider.

First, What is a Bound Book?

A “bound book” is a permanently bound book or an orderly arrangement of loose-leaf pages which must be maintained on the business premises. The format must follow that prescribed in the regulations, and the pages must be numbered consecutively.
[27 CFR 478.121 and 478.125]

Audit Trail

Did you know that software is required to keep an audit trail of your every change in order to be BATFE compliant?  Years ago, before the BATFE changed their requirements for electronic record keeping systems, many individual C&R holders obtained ATF (yes, back then it was known as ATF) approval to use NM Gun Collector Software as an alternate record. When BATFE changed the requirements I posted the changes to my web site ( ATF Alternate Record Notes ) and I refused to comply with these new regulations because BATFE now requires that an electronic record keeping system track every change made by the user. As an individual C&R holder I figured it was better not to use an electronic system for my official C&R bound book than to have my every correction logged and traceable.

Here is the relevant section of the new regulations (excerpted from ATF Rul. 2008-2):
"All data entered into the computer system must be recorded into the database and cannot be capable of being edited or modified at a later date without generating an audit trail. The software system must retain any correction of errors as an entirely new entry, without deleting or modifying the original entry. The system may allow for entries in a notes column to explain any correction."
Do you really want your every correction traced for a government agent to audit?

Alternative:  Print your bound book!

From the definition referenced earlier, a bound book is "an orderly arrangement of loose-leaf pages" so why not use software for your records and then just print your bound book after any change?  The choice is yours.   Choose well!

System Requirements

PC: 100 MHz Pentium Class

OS: Windows 95, 98, NT SP4, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, and Windows 7.  Do not install to the Program Files directory for Windows Vista and Windows 7 or it will not work!

Disk Space: 13 MB available disk space (less for Windows 98 and above and for Systems with Microsoft Office and other Microsoft products already installed)

Memory: If you have enough memory to run Windows effectively, you have enough memory to run this software. (The new Windows systems require lots of memory for the operating system alone and memory requirements vary greatly among operating systems. However, once you get the operating system running efficiently, this software will not require much more.)
