I am using 3.0.1 and am very please. I recently had an new experience where I actually sold something and filled out the disposition form. I figured out I need to do an Add. That made almost everything work except for price. After I enter a price, I disappears and goes back to zero. I have tried a lot of different formats and can not figure out what I need to do to make it work. I sure you have a solution. Thanks for your help.

Thank you so much for telling me the version. I would recommend that you upgrade to the latest. That can be complicated so if you don't want to do it yourself you can send a USB flash drive to me and I will upgrade it for you. If you want to do it yourself, the instructions can be found here:

If you want me to do it for you, please send a USB flash drive with your current nmcollector software directory in its entirety to:

Did you get my email?

I would like to have you take a look at it. just let me know how to send you the data base for review. You have my email.
Thanks, John

Perhaps the best way is by sending me a usb flash drive but I can setup a secure FTP site if you want to send it electronically. Let me know.

John John wrote on March 10, 2020 at 11:34 am:
I am using what I think is the latest version. I downloaded it a few days ago from the site. I purchased the activation last night thinking that may have been the issue. It seemed to be working fine yesterday while I was entering data but when I reopened it last night it only showed six entries. I entered a few more to test, closed program and it was still the same. Only the six original entries.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
It sounds like you are not using a USB flash drive so that is not the problem. I am afraid I do not know how to fix this. If you want to send me your database I can try to figure it out. If you want a refund I understand and will provide it.

Thank you.
John John wrote on March 9, 2020 at 7:29 pm:
As a follow up. My collection statistics for firearms show a count of 126 entries but only SIX are showing in the description lines. Not sure what I am missing.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Unfortunately, this sounds like your data was not completely saved. It seems that something may have interrupted the storage process such as removal of a USB flash drive while data was being saved to it. I can't think of anything else that would explain it. I wonder if exporting your data would reveal anything. Perhaps it will show you what is actually stored in the database but, most likely, it will only successfully export the valid entries.
John John from Charleston wrote on March 9, 2020 at 7:17 pm:
I have entered around 120 entries into the firearms category but when I close the program and log back in only SIX are showing. I re-entered several and closed the program again. Opened it again and only SIX entries are there. Why am I losing all entries after the original SIX?
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
I do not know. This will require some research to figure out.

What version of the program are you using?

Are you running it from a USB Flash drive or from your hard drive?

If you are running it from a USB flash drive did you let the program close completely before ejecting the USB Flash drive? The program saves all of your data when you close it.

Do you have any backups to recover from?

Ok so, I have downloaded the software onto my dad’s new computer and I copied the .mdb files onto his new computer. When I try to open the software it comes up with a message that says Run-time error ‘75’: path/file access error. Please help because I’m not sure what is going wrong.

Thank you so much!
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Hi, sorry about that. This error happens when NM Gun Collector is installed in the Programs directory. It was not an issue when I released the software but later Microsoft changed their security policies so it became a problem. You can find more info here:

I would suggest you uninstall it and then reinstall it in a different directory.

Thank you for the previous reply. So, he has the NM gun collector software, but he wants to know if he downloaded the JE if he could transfer the data from the gun collector software to that one. Also for my information, what is the difference between the gun collector software and the JE version?
Thank you again so much for your help!
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Hi, yes he can transfer his data but it will take some work. You can find the instructions here:

The difference is that I wrote NM Gun Collector for windows only and for gun collections only. I wrote NM Collector Software JE in Java so it can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. I also made it template based so you can manage any kind of collection rather than just Firearms.

Hi, my dad has an old version of the software on his computer that is still running windows 7. How can I move the software with its data onto his new computer that is running windows 10?

I appreciate any help. Thanks!
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
That will depend on whether or not it is NM Gun Collector software or NM Collector Software JE. If the former, it has to be reinstalled and then you can copy the old .mdb files over to the new installation. If NM Collector Software JE you can just copy the entire installation directory from the old computer to the new computer. Here are some useful links:

1. Download NM Gun Collector Software:

What label system do you recomend? I have a large collection and want to print and tag as I go.

Well, I have several formats to choose from: Avery 5388, Avery 5390, and Avery 5960. However, these all depend on a single Bar Code Font (please see

Please let me know how this works out for you.

Thank you.

RE: Running from USB . Ok started from scratch, and unzipped on a newly formatted USB using windows 10, now works perfectly. Originally used MAC to load onto the USB after download don't know if that made a difference. But thanks for the help, nice program!
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Thanks for the feedback. I assumed that you started on Windows and went to the Mac. I will have to test extracting using the Mac first and see what happens.

Hi Clay,

Downloaded version 6.0.2 and installed on my new computer running Windows 10. Installed on the C drive per instructions and it went well.

Question: What files from my old computer do I need to bring across? I see there have been a couple of changes in file layout from the DB that I have installed.

Thanks for your help. Have used NM Collector for over 15 years. Great product.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor

Thank you for using the software for so many years 🙂

Just for clarification. I actually have two programs. One is a relatively recent application I call NM Collector Software ( that runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The latest version of that one is 4.0.1.

The other one is a very old windows only program I called NM Gun Collector Software ( The last version of that one is 6.0.1 so that is the one you are referring to.

I must admit, it has been so long that I do not remember the process for migrating your data from older versions of NM Gun Collector Software to the latest version. I believe there were some conversions involved but, as I recall, I built those into the program so, if that is the case, copy (do not move so you do not lose the originals) all of the files that end in .mdb from your old install to your new install. I do not remember the details of what the older files were so I cannot give you a complete list.

Please let me know how it goes. I did provide an upgrade path from the old NM Gun Collector Software to the new NM Collector Softare. Please see

Please let me know how it goes.

Thank you for the reply, I downloaded the USB version, works fine on Windows 7 & 10 , running MAC OS Catalina. it doesn't save anything in-fact when I open it, it tells me I have 30 days left on evaluation, never changes . I downloaded the MAC version, placed in APPS and it works fine, I do travel so would like to have it work on the USB. Is there anything special on formatting the USB or other things I need to do?
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
So, I can't seem to replicate the problem on my MAc running Catalina. This is what I did. Are you doing anything differently?

1. I formatted a USB flash drive in Windows 10 using the defaults (FAT 32)
2. I downloaded the USB version of NM Collector Software from
3. I extracted the contents of the downloaded zip file to the USB drive in Windows 10
4. I started the program in Windows 10 from the USB Flash drive using the Windows executable and created a new entry
5. I shut down the program and safely ejected the flash drive
6. I loaded my flash drive on my Mac (which I recently reset to factory defaults and upgraded to Catalina)
7. I opened the flash drive and started the Mac version that I had extracted to the USB flash drive earlier in Windows.
8. I opened the previously entered data and made a change.
9. I closed the program and re-opened it and found my change had stuck.
10. I created a new entry on the Mac, saved it, and closed the application on the Mac.
11. I re-opened the application and found my new entry had saved.

Is it possible you are doing something different? The fact that you are not seeing your activation and you are not seeing your data makes me think you are running from a different folder on your USB but I am only speculating.

I am Rundung the software off of a USB, I tried using it on my MAC, it doesn't accept data, ie activated it, it said activated but reopened and says"evaluation". Manage options, select my options in the tree, close program, doesn't save. Same with adding data, after entering, saving, close the program and its not there. Works on a windows computer but need to run on my MAC?
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Thank you for your purchase. I know you are running it off of a USB flash drive so you should have downloaded the USB version but can you confirm what option you downloaded (Windows or USB) and the version of the Mac OS you are running?

Thanks again

p.s. I forgot to check the box to send you an email notification so I am reposting with that box checked

I get the following message when I try to open the program : "you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime". However my Mac OS Catalina won't let me install an older version. How do I fix this?
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Hi, sorry I just noticed this. What version of NM Collector Software are you using? The latest is configured to run on a Mac and has the required Java embedded. The message you report sounds like an earlier version of the software that will not run on older Macs. Thank you.

Hi, sorry I took so long to respond. What Mac OS are you using? The earlier versions of NM Collector Software are not compatible with the latest Mac OS systems. I think you will want to upgrade NM Collector Software (please see

Hi Clayton,

I just entered pictures (file system) in a collection. When I run an inventory report with pictures (file system) the pictures are in reverse order of how I entered them. How can I force them to appear in the report in the order in which I entered them. The order I entered them is the order I wanted them to appear.

Many thanks,
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
I investigated this and I think the only real option for now is to add a new picture sequence field. I will add that to my list of suggested changes for the next release. Thank you.

I purchased NM Collector V3.0.1 from Brownells and have not used it yet (nor have I registered it yet). I see there is a newer version 4.x. I am ready to start utilizing your software to organize my collection records.

It says that upgrades are downloadable and free... but I am not sure how to do this. Also - if I use the Android APP - is it possible to link my laptop to my Smartphone via Google Chrome to make the photograph insertion easier?
I am running Windows 10 with Chrome, and also use an Android Smart Phone.

Please advise on both how to register my current version and also how to update it.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor

Yes, you have an out of date copy and it would be best to upgrade it. You can download the latest here: Please select the USB option since that is what you currently have. Then follow the instructions under "How To Migrate Your Database From The Old Installation to the New Installation." I would suggest you backup your entire usb first by copying it to a safe location on your hard drive or another usb flash drive so you can recover it if you run into any problems. If it seems to difficult, you can send your drive to me and I will upgrade it for you.

Regarding linking the Android app to the desktop data, you have to use the import and export features to transfer your data. How you get your data to and from your phone is up to you. One way to do that is using Google Drive which is accessible from your phone and your PC.

BTW, there is no need to register NM Collector Software.

Hi Clayton,

After using your product for many years (about 15 years), my email address has changed and I no longer have access to the old email address. It has been too long for any record of the original purchase to be available for me to see in PayPal and my email address for PayPal has also changed.

I do have the original activation key. Is it possible to get a new activation key based on my new email address?

Many thanks,
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Yes, please post your original activation key and associated email address here along with your new email address so I can confirm them and then I will email a new activation to your new email.

I will not post your response so no one else will see it.

Thank you

Update: Activation sent. thank you
