Hi Clayton,

I just entered pictures (file system) in a collection. When I run an inventory report with pictures (file system) the pictures are in reverse order of how I entered them. How can I force them to appear in the report in the order in which I entered them. The order I entered them is the order I wanted them to appear.

Many thanks,

I investigated this and I think the only real option for now is to add a new picture sequence field. I will add that to my list of suggested changes for the next release. Thank you.

I purchased NM Collector V3.0.1 from Brownells and have not used it yet (nor have I registered it yet). I see there is a newer version 4.x. I am ready to start utilizing your software to organize my collection records.

It says that upgrades are downloadable and free... but I am not sure how to do this. Also - if I use the Android APP - is it possible to link my laptop to my Smartphone via Google Chrome to make the photograph insertion easier?
I am running Windows 10 with Chrome, and also use an Android Smart Phone.

Please advise on both how to register my current version and also how to update it.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor

Yes, you have an out of date copy and it would be best to upgrade it. You can download the latest here: Please select the USB option since that is what you currently have. Then follow the instructions under "How To Migrate Your Database From The Old Installation to the New Installation." I would suggest you backup your entire usb first by copying it to a safe location on your hard drive or another usb flash drive so you can recover it if you run into any problems. If it seems to difficult, you can send your drive to me and I will upgrade it for you.

Regarding linking the Android app to the desktop data, you have to use the import and export features to transfer your data. How you get your data to and from your phone is up to you. One way to do that is using Google Drive which is accessible from your phone and your PC.

BTW, there is no need to register NM Collector Software.

Hi Clayton,

After using your product for many years (about 15 years), my email address has changed and I no longer have access to the old email address. It has been too long for any record of the original purchase to be available for me to see in PayPal and my email address for PayPal has also changed.

I do have the original activation key. Is it possible to get a new activation key based on my new email address?

Many thanks,
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Yes, please post your original activation key and associated email address here along with your new email address so I can confirm them and then I will email a new activation to your new email.

I will not post your response so no one else will see it.

Thank you

Update: Activation sent. thank you

When trying to print complete reports on individual firearms, only a portion of the "condition comments" section displays / prints. Is there a character limit for this field related to the reports or am I just not holding my mouth right? It accepted everything during the input but just will not do a complete printout of "condition comments".
Thanks in advance. By the way....Super Program!!
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Thank you for your purchase and I am happy you like the program. There is a space limit for the reports but it seems I missed a problem with the width of the condition comments and the notes. They are not extending across the full width of the report so they are unnecessarily limited.

I will work on a solution and get back to you.

As I looked into this I noticed what is happening - For reports with no pictures, I am providing more room for notes than condition comments so that is why the condition comments are limited. I am reducing the space for notes and increasing the space for condition comments on those pages. For the reports with pictures, I am maximizing the space on the right for the pictures which truncates the notes and condition comments. If you have not pictures, the space is blank. I will see if I can adjust things to provide more space for condition comments.

Update: Reports have been updated with new formats allowing more space for condition comments and a zip file with the changed reports uploaded here:

Please download the archive and extract the contents to your reports directory on your computer which should be located here: \\Contents\Resources\Reports. For example, in my case the path is C:\NMCollectorJE\\Contents\Resources\Reports

Please let me know how you like them.

Is there a way to transfer my database to an unencrypted version? I encrypted mine and it is preventing me from using it on my phone.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
I'm afraid once encrypted you can't go back. However, you can export the content and then import it to the android app if your phone is an android. If you want to have an unencrypted version of your database you can install a new copy, export the content from your encrypted database, and then import the exported files to your new unencrypted copy.

Great program!
I just downloaded and starting to load information, but have a few questions:
- Is there a way to edit the default responses? I tried to enter Imbel as a mfg, but a default "IMI" forces my response to read "IMbel". Minor problem.
- Is there a way to total cost and sales amounts for inventories?
- How do I direct the back-up to a flash drive? For some reason, no choices appear.
Thanks in advance!
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Thank you.

1. You can edit the dropdown lists via the Manage menu - just select the category of dropdowns you want to edit and then the specific dropdown list. In your case, that would be Manage -> Edit Identification Dropdown Lists. When the page opens select Firearms from the first dropdown list and Manufacturer from the second. Now you can edit the data in the dropdown list.

2. You can see totals in the Statistics window which is opened by clicking the Statistics button on the top of the Identification and Description tabs.

3. The best way to backup is by using your file system to copy directories from one location to another. Please see

Hello Clay, I suddenly am getting the error "database not found, nmcollector will now exit". I run a linux system and have not messed with the directories at all. Is there a way to repair this?
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Hi Linc,

Sorry so slow to get back to you, somehow I missed this message. I do not know what it could be other than the database directory is missing or read only.

I do not know what to suggest other than recover your database directory from backup. Be sure to keep a copy of your current database directory just in case.

If you want you can create a password by following the instructions in the printable user manual: However, I do not think that is what you are really asking. You already have a fully activated version.

What do you mean by "get it to work on Windows 10?" What issue(s) are you encountering?

Thank you.

I've been a longtime NM Collector user for a long time now, so long that paypal no longer has records of my purchase. and I'm moving to a new computer, and I can't find my original Key anywhere. I've got the new version downloaded, but now I'm Stuck....and not having a great day. Please advise...….Thanks!

Hi, so if you backed up your collection all you have to do is copy that to the new upgrade. That way you keep your data and your activation. Please see the download page ( for instructions.

Thank you

My NMCOLLECTOR software isn't saving anything anymore. I make changes and hit save but when I go back into the program the changes I made are gone. Can you help me out? Thank you.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
My only experience with this is documented in the known issues page. The only time I have heard of this is when NM Collector is installed to a Windows default installation directory or there are problems with the Java installation. Since yours was working it can't be the installation directory issue. Do you know if there have been any changes to your java installation on your computer? One option is to upgrade to the latest version which has Java embedded with the program so you do not have to rely on Java installed on your computer.

Here is the entry from the known issues page:

Program exhibits strange behavior and or data changes that you have made do not save. Assuming that you did not install to “C:\Program Files\…” or “C:\Program Files(x86)\…” directories this is caused by a disabled or improperly configured installation of Java on your computer. A properly installed, configured, and working copy of Java is a pre-requisite for NM Collector Software to operate properly. Please make sure you have the latest version of Java installed and running on your computer by visiting this site:

YES is checked for Include In Reports
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
I don't know. Can you send me your data so I can troubleshoot the problem? You do not have to send me everything if you don't want - just the ones that are not showing. If you can upload a zip file of your entire installation or send the entire installation directory on a USB flash drive to:

Been using your software for years. Love it. Had a bit of trouble migrating to v. 4.0.1 for my Mac, but up and running now.

I have an issue with Reports. No matter what report I run, the first 3 items in my collection are left off. They show up, with all their data, in the collection, but when I run a report the first three just aren't there.

Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Please verify that "Yes" is selected for "Include in Reports?" on the Identification tab for the items that are not showing up in the reports.

Do you have an import app for ver 4?

Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Hi, no need to export from NM Collector Software version 3 to 4. Just have to copy your database to a new directory. The instructions are on this page: Please scroll down to the section titled: "How To Migrate Your Database From The Old Installation to the New Installation."

If you are talking about migrating from NM Gun Collector Software version 3.x to NM Collector Software, the migration process is documented here:

Thank you.

Hi all. Just want you to know that I have not been getting notified of new entries so I am way behind in answering inquiries. I will go through them and post responses as I get to them.

If I can't figure out how to get notifications to work I will find another way to provide support.

Thanks for your patience.
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
Problem Solved - I am getting notifications again.

Well, I answered all of the outstanding requests and then researched the lack of notifications. I found that gmail is suppressing them. I only see them if I specifically search for them and then I get a big warning that they may be phishing attempts.

I changed my configurations to send them to a non-gmail account and now I see them. It does warn me about the possibility that these are phishing emails but at least it lets me see them!!!

I have recently upgraded my Mac to the new Catalina OS and now I get a Java error message: "To open nmCollector JE you need to install Legacy Java SE 6 runtime". Problem is, I already have a newer version and I don't believe I can install an older version.
Please advise as to what I can do to get to my records.
Thanks in advance,

I think the best thing to do is to upgrade NM Collector Software to the latest version. Apple changed the way java programs are supposed to be deployed which forced me to reconfigure the software. More information here:

Thank you.

Clayton, I just purchased your latest version for Mac. I want to migrate my data from MyGunDB to yours. I'm following your instructions creating a .csv, but for some reason, I get this message saying "Export Failed. Do you have the export file open in some program? and I don't have anything open.
Can you help me
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
I'm sorry, I am not sure what to do about that. I do not support or understand MyGunDB. I will venture a guess though. Since it thinks the file is open by another application I would consider closing all applications, shutting down your computer, restarting your computer, and then trying again.

Hi There,
I'm evaluating your free version 1 running on Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6 and after few minutes of entry some data I get this message of
"Writing Data to Disk. Do not Interrupt." and it stays there forever. How can I fix that problem
I want to try it first before I buy it
Admin Reply by: cjpryor
So, that message will only go away once the data is saved. It sounds like it is having problems saving the data. Are you running it off of a network drive? I would suggest trying it on your local hard drive.

No license purchase is required. However, you do have to check the "Edit Captions" check box in order to add the new fields.
