Security
The Security feature can be used to protect your data if you wish. Please keep the following points in mind when using this feature.
- By default, this product is delivered with security disabled. Anybody who has access to the program has access to all features.
- You must enable security in order to use it by selecting "enabled" under the "Security" menu option of the "Utilities" menu. Security is enabled when a check appears next to "enabled".
- Once security is enabled, login is required at startup. If a user can not enter a valid User ID and Password combination, they are not allowed into the application.
- The User Management window is used to enter and edit User IDs, passwords and access levels.
- Each user is assigned an access level. Available access levels are Administrator, Read/Write, and Read Only.
- Users with Administrator privileges have access to everything including the "User Management" window. They can read your data, change your data, delete your data and even change access to your data.
- Users with Read/Write privileges have access to everything but the "User Management" window. They can read your data, change your data, and delete your data
- Read Only users have read access to your data but they can not change any of your data nor do they have access to security.
- It is best to set up your users, including yourself, before you enable security. Once you have enabled security, if you have not set yourself up with Administrator privileges you will not be able to change your security settings.
- The system comes with an "Admin" UserID with the password "administrator" and Administrator access level. When you have given yourself Administrator access to your application and you have verified that your settings work, you will want to delete this UserID. Otherwise, anybody can access your system through this User ID.
- Do not delete the Admin User ID until after you have tested your own access privileges. If you make any mistakes, you can use this User ID to get into your system to correct any incorrect security settings.
Please be careful with the Security feature of this application. It is very powerful and when used properly will allow you to control who has access to what levels of control in your application. However, it also has the potential to lock you out of your own data.
As a precautionary measure, a file named "Default security.mdb" is installed into your application's installation directory. This file can be used to restore the default security settings. Simply delete the current "security.mdb" file and replace it with this one by renaming it from "Default security.mdb" to "security.mdb" in your installation directory.
If you want to eliminate this "back door" into your system, simple delete the "Default security.mdb" file or put it someplace safe in case you need it at a later date.
